Brooklyn Cookin' is the perfect way to enjoy a workshop with your significant other or friend: One of you loves to shoot photos, and the other loves to cook (or wants to learn how). We're offering this hit workshop for the 2nd time this summer. Chris Marquardt from Tips From the Top Floor leads the food photography seminar and a Chef Mark Tafoya from the Culinary Media Network leads the cooking workshop.

The two tracks will take place in parallel and intersect several times a day. At these points the photographers will take great pictures of the wonderful food that was prepared by the chefs. I full day of the workshop will take place outside in Brooklyn: Farmers’ market shopping with Mark Tafoya, market/street photography with Chris Marquardt.
"I can not say enough about how much I enjoyed the cooking workshop -- learned a lot and use what I learned all the time: Pork Adobo, poached pears, and having fun in the kitchen!"

Workshop agenda and contents
This list is a rough outline of the topics covered on this workshop. The actual contents will always be adapted to the needs of the group to provide the most for all participants.

The workshop days start at 9am and end at 5pm.

There will be a one-hour lunch break around noon time.

On the first day, the photographers will have the chance to learn about street photography from Chris, while the chefs will spend time with Mark learning about food quality and what to watch out for when shopping. We will spend that day at various locations, and as Mark is a New York City local, you have a lot of great sight-seeing coming up. Or as Martin, a 2009 workshop participant said: "If you get the chance to be out and about with him in New York City, his knowledge of the area is encyclopedic."

FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

What do I need to bring?

For all workshops please bring a digital camera, memory card, charger. Bringing a laptop is optional.

In addition:

San Francisco Street Safari: The classical street photography focal length is around 24 to 35mm. The different aspects of street photography work well with all sorts of different focal lengths, but if you have a lens in that focal range, make sure you bring it.

Brooklyn Cookin' workshop: We will explore both available light and studio lighting on this workshop. Bring your brightest lens for the available light segment, a 50/1.8 will do nicely.

Toronto Urban: Street and cityscapes can greatly benefit from wider focal lengths, so if you own a lens in the area around 24mm, make sure to bring it.

Everest Trek: Please see the Everest Trek web site for more details.

What is included in the workshop fee?

Only the workshop is included. Transportation and accommodation are not included unless specified otherwise.

The Brooklyn Cookin' workshop has all main meals for the 2nd and 3rd day included in the workshop fee.

I know what every button on my camera does. How can I benefit from the workshop?

Being good on the technical side of photography is very helpful in many situations. Still, we as photographers can benefit to learn in other areas too. In order to take things to the next level, a photographer has to improve on the creative side too. On this workshop you will learn why certain images create certain reactions in the viewer, and how you can gain control over this with your photography.

Others say I have a good "photogapher's eye". What can I learn on the workshop?

When we start off with photography, most of us begin taking pictures "from the gut". This workshop will teach you knowledge about how you can achieve specific things with your camera and how to get a lot more control over how the viewer will see your photography.

I am not sure I'm good enough to participate in the workshop.

You most likely are. I have never had a participant at any of my workshops who walked away without having learned something. And I have never had a participant who was too much of a beginner to participate. I take great care to make sure all participants benefit from the workshops, no matter what level they are on. If you are not sure, pleae contact me and we'll find out together.

I was a participant on an earlier workshop. Will I get a discount?

Yes, repeat participants get a discount. Please see the pricing section below for specifics.
